Balayage in the Hamptons

Hand-painted balayage being applied at Gil Ferrer Salon in Bridgehampton

Color

Balayage, painted by hand

Color swept through the hair by hand rather than packed into foils — so it lightens where the sun would, and grows out without a line.

Balayage is French for “to sweep.” Your colorist paints lightener onto the surface of each section, freehand, watching how it sits against your natural depth. There is no cap, no foil, no fixed grid — which is why no two heads of balayage look quite the same.

The result is soft at the root and brightest through the mid-lengths and ends, the way hair lifts after a long summer outdoors. From $400 with a senior colorist.

The difference

Balayage or highlights?

They are not the same service, and one is not simply better. It depends on how much lift you want and how often you can come back.

Balayage

Painted freehand. Softer at the root, brighter through the ends. Grows out with no visible line, so you can leave it three or four months. Best for sun-lit dimension and lived-in blonde or bronde.

Foil highlights

Woven and wrapped. Foil holds heat, so it lifts further and more evenly — the choice for real brightness, full coverage, or grey blending. Needs a root touch-up every six to eight weeks.

Plenty of clients have both: balayage through the lengths, a few foils around the face. Your colorist will tell you honestly which your hair needs.

What to expect

Your appointment

Consultation

We look at your hair in daylight, talk about how much lift you want, and check what previous color is still in the ends. Bring photographs if you have them.

Painting

The lightener is applied by hand, section by section, then left to develop while we watch it. Most balayage appointments run two to three hours.

Toning and finish

A gloss takes the raw lightened tone where it should be — warm, cool or neutral — then a blowout so you leave seeing exactly how it falls.

Questions

What people ask

How long does balayage last?

Because there is no hard regrowth line, most people go three to four months between appointments — longer than foils, which usually need a root touch-up every six to eight weeks. Many clients come in for a gloss halfway through to refresh the tone without lightening again.

Will it damage my hair?

Balayage sits on the surface rather than being wrapped and heated in foil, so it is generally gentler than a full head of highlights. How much lift your hair can take safely depends on its condition and what color is already in it — that is the honest answer, and it is what the consultation is for.

Does it work on dark hair?

Yes, though it takes longer and often more than one visit. Very dark hair lifts through red and orange on its way to a usable base, so a good result is usually staged across two appointments rather than forced in one.

How do I keep it through a Hamptons summer?

Sun, salt water and chlorine all pull warmth and brassiness into lightened hair. A UV-protective leave-in, a hat on the beach, and rinsing before you swim make a real difference. Ask your stylist for a purple or blue toning shampoo suited to your tone — used once a week, not every wash.

What does balayage cost?

From $400. The final price depends on your hair length and density and on which stylist you see — longer, thicker hair takes more product and more time. We will confirm the price with you at the consultation, before anything is applied.
